Any number of interesting movies you might want to catch this weekend — and while there are also a couple of duds now playing too, by and large it’s that time of year when people are looking towards intelligent fare, awards season, and maybe the second-to-last Harry Potter pic. Which means that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint are going to be looking for work before you know it in parts outside Hogwarts. Not that any of them will have to look far, mind you. There are worse things to be nowadays than a young, talented and in-demand actor. If you’d care to take a little gander at a few of the more promising ones, check out Moviefone’s 25 Under 25 that I mentioned yesterday. It’s a cool list — and not a little handy. Because you can be sure this weekend someone’s going to be talking about one or more of these kids. And when everyone else stops with Rob, Taylor or Kristen you can thoughtfully point out that we oughtn’t to rule out Alex Pettyfer, Mia Wasikowska or Aaron Johnson any time soon while we’re on the topic of young Hollywood. Valuable hip-pocket stuff. Plus you may want to keep some of this crop in mind for the newest PCA voting category ‘Favorite Movie Star Under 25’ presented with Moviefone. Now, two very big movies opening at your local cineplex today; one of them features a huge star and a huge star director and it looks like a meditation on existence which’ll either be gorgeous and thoughtful, or gorgeous and maybe a little slow. The other film stars two unknowns reprising earlier roles in a sequel designed to scare the living daylights out of you, me, and hopefully millions of other people across North America. Will you see Hereafter or Paranormal Activity 2? I predict big box office numbers for PA2 – the original was made for all of about seventeen dollars and it proved a hugely successful pheenom – based largely on the savvy way they marketed it. You couldn’t pay me to set foot in a theater for either the original or this one, yet I know lots of people who have been waiting eagerly to catch it. Hereafter is a very different story – this, much like the smaller movie Conviction which was just released, is affectionately known as Oscar Bait and directed by Clint Eastwood who never ceases to surprise moviegoers with his choice of projects. Hereafter involves Matt Damon as a man reluctant to use his extrasensory gifts at the crossroads of intersecting stories in various parts of the globe. Both movies will be competing against the extremely successful Jackass 3D as well as The Social Network. In fact, of everything else out there, those two are the ones getting the most buzz (um, for different reasons). That said, let’s toss all four movies out and see what interests you most. Voice your choice in today’s featured poll and tell us which of these films you’re most excited about:
2) Jackass 3D
3) Paranormal Activity 2
4) The Social Network
