Last night yours truly got to go to a super cool benefit in New York City courtesy of PCA Prexy Fred Nelson (and we were also joined by PCA exec prox-y Hooshere Bezdikian – another cool addition) given by Our Time Theater Company. Our Time was founded in 2001 by wunderkind Taro Alexander and its mission has been to help kids who stutter. Based in New York City, they have an absolutely incredible camp (and a fabulous new one just about to open in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina) where kids who stutter can go and be in a nurturing and empowering environment – something that hasn’t always been available to kids who stutter in the past. In fact, this may be the first of its kind and they’re honestly changing lives every day.
(By the way, it’s estimated that 60 million people in the world stutter – and 5% of them are children.)
The NYC gala evening was a huge success, and this year they honored David Seidler, a former stutterer, who wrote the screenplay for multiple Oscar-winner The King’s Speech. He gave an impassioned and pretty inspirational talk, and the evening also featured a special performance from the incomparable Carly Simon (last year’s honoree) and her son Ben. Of course the highlight was the kids, several of whom have never before been in front of an audience and who now, courtesy of the empowerment they received at Camp Our Time, could stand on a stage in front of several hundred people and both talk and then sing! The whole evening was truly amazing and this is definitely an organization worth investigating. If you know a kid who stutters this could be an incredible opportunity… for more info just go to Ourtimestutter.org.
