Orlando Bloom, Milla Jovovich & Co. or Paranormal Activity 3?

Happy and not-soon-enough Friday. Time to check out various goings on at your local cineplex. It being October and all, there’s a lot of candy around and movie studios know this. Consequently the films they release this month range from actioners to downright scary stuff – anything to keep kids already basking in a collective sugar high continuously enthralled. That’s why Hugh and the boxing robots will continue to be popular.

The Three Musketeers is also opening in theaters, and while you may not think of this as scary, dude-oriented fare, the director’s own resume begs to differ. For Paul Anderson, the man helming the adventures of D’Artganan, Athos, Porthos and Aramis (that’s just in case you wind up playing Trivial Pursuit this weekend) has made some pretty dark stuff. All three Resident Evils. Mortal KombatAlien vs. Predator. Event Horizon. Death Race. See what I mean? Expect action and perhaps even blood and guts. Plus, the classic tale also has an appealing cast: Milla Jovovich, Matthew Macfadyen, Orlando Bloom, Logan Lerman. Too bad they’re all going to be covered with mud, their voices obscured by pounding hooves and lots of powerful orchestral music to denote an epic period piece. That’s nevertheless suspenseful, because it’s October.

For something more contemporary, and probably a lot scarier, we have Paranormal Activity 3. Now I’m not exactly certain why they keep making these movies, except that apparently they each cost just over three hundred dollars to create  – give or take. Riding on the coattails (and the conceit) of the original, here two little girls meet and evidently befriend the invisible creature living in their home. Hopefully the trio gets on well; I suspect theirs will be a lucrative pact at the box office, in any case.

If, on the other hand you wish to see a goofy Englishman spoof James Bond (and I’m not talking about Timothy Dalton) you might like Rowan Atkinson in Johnny English Reborn. Here, the English comedian most known to US audiences for Blackadder and Mister Bean plays a secret agent who has to track a group of lethal assassins desperate to kill the Chinese premiere. I have to say I’ve never been crazy about Atkinson, but the trailer for this movie is hilarious. This one looks kind of good.

So what’ll it be this weekend? Something dashing with Orlando Bloom? Or creepy, grainy, bluish videotape designed to make you jittery later? You tell us what looks good. And don’t forget to vote for your PCA noms!

Today’s poll:

Which of the weekend’s movies are you most looking forward to?
