Podcasts: The New Sheriff in Town

While we here at the People’s Choice Awards are first and foremost fans of Movies, Music and TV, we certainly don’t discriminate against other entertainment mediums.  Video games? Love ’em! Radio? Listen every day! Viral videos? We certainly have our favorites!  But while those are all awesome (and keep me employed), there’s a relatively new fad that is about to take Hollywood by storm: Podcasts. For those who don’t know, Podcasts are essentially short radio programs that you can download right to your computer or iPod.  Shows cover everything from news and health to food and pets to comedy and plain old talk radio. They are perfect for work commutes, drowning out loud coworkers and long walks on the beach.  Now check out my 3 favorite entertainment-focused podcasts below, then get ta’ downloading:

Doug Loves Movies – A simple premise: Comedian Doug Benson (Best Week Ever) invites 3 or 4 of his comedian friends to talk about movies in front of a live audience.  Every week Doug talks shop with a rotation of his funniest friends and often peppers his panel with famous faces like Jon Hamm, Elizabeth Shue, Zach Galianakis and Aziz Ansari. Games are played at low stakes, like the catchy Leonard Maltin Game (which he made up years ago with old friend and frequent guest Sarah Silverman), audience participation is encouraged and fun is had by all.

Comedy Bang! Bang! – Formerly known as Comedy Death Ray, but still just as fun, Comedy Bang! Bang! is like talk radio for the hipster set.  Host Scott Aukerman (Mr. Show with Bob and Dave, Between Two Ferns) mixes semi-serious interviews (with stars like Adam Scott, Patton Oswalt and Amy Poehler) with interruptions from improvisors and impressionists to give the audience a totally unique and hilarious experience. And the best news? The show has been adapted for the small screen and will start airing on IFC in June.

WTF with Marc Maron – Marc Maron is an interesting fellow.  A standup comedian since the ’80s who achieved moderate recognition with frequent appearances on Late Night with Conan O’Brien, he’s only just achieved the success he’s been itching for since his early days — and it’s all thanks to his Podcast. For the past three years, Maron has invited celebrity guests into his tiny garage for no-holds barred conversations, many that have led to laughter (Jimmy Fallon), introspection (Russell Brand) and even tears (Louis C.K.). While his guests continue to get bigger, Maron’s own life ain’t too shabby; a comedy pilot based on his life and podcast has also been picked up by IFC.

Now that I’ve told you about my favorites, which one are you most likely to listen to?
