Nine Years and Counting

Today is a very special day. Not only is it yet another sunny, hot summer day in NYC – about which I try not to complain because after all a) I chose to live here and b) it’s summer, it’s supposed to be hot, so stop complaining, people! But I digress. Today is extra special because nine years ago on this very day, my then fiance and I tied the knot. It’s hard to believe that nine years have already flown by – it feels like only a couple of years ago that we gathered our closest family and friends for the party of the decade, if I may say so myself, at the incredible Oheka Castle in Long Island, New York. We danced for hours to both a traditional Armenian band as well as a DJ (also a close friend) who kept the party poppin’ for well after it was supposed to have ended (yes, we paid for the extra hour that you can tack on to most reception venues – who doesn’t??) We then “retired” to the cigar lounge for more celebrating and dancing accompanied by a live jazz trio, not to mention the make-your-own-ice-cream-sunday station. And while most of the guests finally did leave after that – it was, afterall, approaching 2am – the rest of us headed upstairs to our massive bridal suite where a full bar and a specially selected pile of CDs (don’t forget, this was 2003) awaited for the after party. It was beyond fun, and went on ’til about six in the morning. What can I say? Ain’t no party like an Armenian-wedding-party cause an Armenian-wedding-party don’t stop!

Fast forward nine years, and my husband and I still know how to have a good time. A couple who parties together stays together. No? That’s not how it goes? Well, it should. And we have even more fun these days with our incredible young daughter who lights up our lives every single day. While he and I have had our ups and downs over the years, as most normal human couples do, we have managed to stick it out through thick and thin, and our daughter has proven to be the ultimate reward and constant reminder of why we got hitched nine years ago in the first place. Love. Life. Laughter… and family.

Now let me bring this back to pop culture, because that’s what we’re all about. Weddings are the theme of many a popular film, and some of my favorites include, in no particular order, the following:

The Wedding Crashers. Well, this one’s just obvious. There is no film in the history of the world that features as many fun wedding scenes as this little comedic gem. It’s impossible to pick just one scene, so I won’t. But I will say that the scene in the church at the end where Owen Wilson’s character finally professes his love for Rachel McAdams’ character definitely stands out as one of my favorite moments.

Then there’s Bride Wars. Nothing is funnier to me then the scene where the two former best friends turned competitive brides (Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson) literally roll around in the aisle in a ferocious fight just as they are each about to tie the knot – they morph into a ball of tulle and layers of satin, with hair being pulled and fabric being torn and all you want is for them to stop and pull themselves together, but you also secretly want them to keep fighting because it’s so hilariously unlikely and brilliantly executed.

Lastly there is My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Fortunately the Greek wedding depicted in that film was nothing like my own Armenian wedding, save for the ethnic music and dancing. The hideous bridesmaids dresses and over the top wedding gown, coupled with the gaudy decor and tacky reception hall make it a classic parody of every stereotypically ethnic wedding (at least of the Mediterranean persuasion) and yet you find yourself rooting for the adorably unlikely and incredibly happy couple who emerge unscathed from the tackiest of all big fat weddings and continue happily on the journey of the rest of their lives together.

So feel free to wish me a happy anniversary in the comments below, and then voice your choice in today’s featured poll and tell us which of these films featuring memorable wedding scenes is your favorite?
