Charming Tatum

The nominees for People’s Choice Awards 2013 were announced yesterday at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. Voting season has officially begun! Executive Producer Mark Burnett and host Kaley Cuoco were joined by Jason Aldean, Anthony Anderson, Sophia Bush, Jason O’Mara, Monica Potter and Casey Wilson to read the top five nominees in 48 categories across movies, music and TV. It’s unclear why you’re reading this when you should be voting, but I do appreciate the love.

Starting today, the next five blogs will focus on the nominees for Favorite Movie Actor: Channing Tatum, Johnny Depp, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Robert Downey, Jr., and Will Smith. First up, Magic Mike himself.

I think Liz Lemon said it best in 30 Rock when she was asked by Jack to quickly summarize the year in pop culture: “An hour for the year? Am I supposed to just scratch the surface of Channing Tatum’s meteoric rise?”

I feel your pain, Liz. I feel your pain. How can Mr. Tatum’s accomplishments in 2012 be squeezed into one little blog post? I find myself turning to the immortal words of Lulu: “It isn’t easy, but I’ll try.”

Like many a fan of the Step Up franchise, I first noticed Channing in his star-making turn as Tyler in the original movie and its delicious sequel, Step Up 2: The Streets. As much as I enjoyed those flicks, I don’t think I would have predicted that he would soon be Hollywood’s go-to guy for, well, everything.

Channing starred in not one, not two, but THREE hit movies this year. He showed his dramatic chops opposite Rachel McAdams in The Vow, his comedic flair opposite Jonah Hill in 21 Jump Street, and his killer abs opposite a lot of other killer abs in Magic Mike. Talk about versatility!

The Vow opened in February, just in time for Valentine’s Day, and went on to gross $125 million at the box office. 21 Jump Street was released a month later and pulled in $138 million. Magic Mike came out in June and earned $114 million in the midst of all the traditional summer super hero blockbusters. In case you need help with the math, that’s three consecutive entries in the nine figure club. What did you accomplish this year?

He’s athletic, handsome, charming, funny, and a damn good actor. If he weren’t so likable I’d hate him.

After a year like his, what does one do for an encore? An in-demand guy like Tatum has seven projects in the pipeline: G.I. Joe: Retaliation, Side Effects, Foxcatcher, White House Down, The Contortionist’s Handbook, 21 Jump Street 2 and Jupiter Ascending. From the sounds of that, I’m thinking his first People’s Choice Award nomination certainly won’t be his last.

After voting for your favorite People’s Choice Awards nominees, be sure to voice your choice in today’s featured poll:
