And Now Back To Our Regularly Scheduled Programming

It’s official folks- the holidays are over. Countless discarded Christmas trees are strewn about the sidewalks of Manhattan, tourists have mostly gone home, the last of the holiday cards have arrived in the mail, holiday themed commercials have stopped inundating our TV viewing experiences and best of all – or worst of all, depending on how you look at it – we are finally back to business as usual. And although I will certainly miss the joy of the holidays (made even more joyous by my wide eyed, Santa loving three year old daughter) I am sort of glad to be back to some sort of routine. There’s just something about the chaos of the holidays that make it OK for them to be over when they’re over, thereby making it somewhat easier to embrace going back to a routine.

Having said that, it’s important to note that in my particular case, the “routine” won’t really start until after the very first star-studded television event of the new year takes place on January 9th at 9/8c on CBS (that’s right, I’m talking about the People’s Choice Awards, people!) But for everyone else who isn’t hopping on a flight from JFK to LAX only hours after overcoming their New Year’s Day hangovers, things are quickly going back to “normal” as we collectively kick off the new year. And as an added bonus, I just learned on the 11 o’clock news that the country has also narrowly averted the “fiscal cliff” by way of the house vote tonight, so things are certainly looking up so far in 2013!

One of the best parts of all the normalcy that comes with the return from the holiday season is the fact that some our favorite TV shows are back in action. I just had the pleasure of stumbling upon the first new episode of NBC’s Parenthood (that I somehow hadn’t anticipated for at least another week!) and boy did it feel good. There’s something about being reacquainted with your favorite characters and all their various story lines that’s almost comforting – like being reunited with old friends. And in the case of Parenthood, for those who follow my posts, you already know I’m a huge fan, so getting to see the gang again tonight was a very pleasant surprise. I don’t want to spoil it for you if you haven’t seen it yet (who knows, like me you probably had no idea it was even going to be on!) but let’s just say, it certainly did not disappoint. Granted, for the first time probably ever, I didn’t find myself reaching for my box of Puffs tissues, but I did thoroughly enjoy it nonetheless.

Another show I’m excited to see return is HBO’s Girls. Those four quirky New York City dwelling, 20-something, misguided and misunderstood gals managed to nestle comfortably in my DVR the first season (despite some of the questionable plot lines and highly unrealistic scenarios) and I’m excited to see what they are up to next. If for nothing else, to get to enjoy Lena Dunham’s brilliant writing. Ladies, show me what you got – which will hopefully be a lot less of Lena’s character in compromising positions.

Last but not least, there’s my beloved 30 Rock. Not only is it returning from its quick winter break, but it’s embarking upon the final episodes of the entire series. It’s time to bid adieu to one of TVs smartest sitcoms ever – where hilarious moments happen so often that you literally have to rewind to keep up. The alternative? Potentially missing a comedy gem that is sure to be the hot topic the next morning, and needless to say, that is simply never an option. Though I wish it wasn’t coming to an end, I am looking forward to seeing how Liz Lemon and the rest of the motley crew will head off into the sunset… and I’m sure I’ll have to re-watch a scene or two along the way.

Obviously there’s tons of great TV returning in the coming weeks, but these are the few that I’m most excited about getting back into my routine with.

Voice your choice and tell us which of these TV shows kicking off 2013 with all new episodes is your favorite?

30 Rock
