‘Mortal Instruments’ sequel put on hold; How would you fix the franchise?

First Pirates, now Mortals.

The sequel to Mortal Instruments has been put on hold, The Guardian reports.

Though the dystopian drama—which starred Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower—was based on a series of buzzy, best-selling young adult novels—it failed to make much of an impact at the box office. Now, producers are dialing back to adjust the course of the sequel, Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes.

“Constantin Film has a long tradition of adapting books to the big screen. Pushing back the start of production of City of Ashes was a decision we did not take lightly,” producer Martin Moszkowicz said in a statement yesterday. “But after speaking with all of our partners on the creative and distribution side, it was clear that it will be beneficial to have more time to reposition the film in the current marketplace. The Mortal Instruments series has an incredibly loyal and ardent fan base and is a best-selling book series. While taking Cassandra Clare’s vision to the screen we want to make sure to draw on the full potential of the franchise.”

Your turn: What didn’t work in the first Mortal Instruments film? What would you change in the sequel?
