She may have taken over the VMAs and twerked her way to the top the charts, but Miley Cyrus’ biggest accomplishment in 2013 isn’t career related. It’s much more personal.
In a new interview with Barbara Walters, Cyrus reveals that her biggest achievement this year was learning to stand on her own after breaking up with fiance Liam Hemsworth.
“I was so scared of ever being alone. I think conquering that fear this year was actually bigger than any other transition I had this entire year,” Cyrus tells Walters in a sneak peek from the upcoming ABC special Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People of 2013. “I don’t ever want to have to need someone again where you feel like without them you can’t be yourself.”
That’s not to say she has any regrets though. Cyrus, who was just 19 when she got engaged to Hunger Games star Hemsworth, says she “definitely wouldn’t change being engaged.”
“It was so fun wearing a fat rock for a few years,” says Cyrus, “But now, I just feel like I can actually be happy. I wait for those moments of silence, when I’m just at my house, by myself.”
Of course, that’s not to say Cyrus is against settling down with someone else in the future.
“I think I’ll want that in the time that it needs to be,” explains the star.
She’s not the only one who is happier post-breakup.
Two months after his engagement with Cyrus ended, Hemsworth told the Associated Press that he was “more centered and grounded” than he had ever been. “For a few years I went down a path where I forgot to be in the moment and enjoy the moment,” said Hemsworth, who added that Hunger Games co-star Jennifer Lawrence helped him find his way. ““But being around someone like Jen, who is so honest and laughs all day long, I am forced to be in the right now. I’m much happier.”
