Fresh Prince of Bel Air fans got some sad news over the holidays.

James Avery — who was best known for playing Will Smith’s Uncle Phil on the ’90s sitcom — passed away on Dec. 31 at the age of 68.

As the tough but lovable Uncle Phil, Avery effortlessly alternated between comedic and acerbic and stood his own in a big, ensemble cast.

Below, we pay tribute to Avery by revisiting our 5 favorite Uncle Phil moments from The Prince of Bel-Air:

1. Kids Ain’t Nothing but Trouble

2. Don’t cross Uncle Phil

Nobody transitioned from jovial to apoplectic better than James Avery.

3. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air rarely missed an opportunity to poke fun at Uncle Phil’s weight.

4. Uncle Phil vs. Jazz

One of our favorite running gags of the 1990s was watching DJ Jazzy Jeff get tossed out of the Banks residence on a semi-weekly basis.

5. Evil Uncle Phil

Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Avery’s son on the popular sitcom, addressed the passing of his co-star on Twitter: “I’m deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly.”
