Harry Potter fans are a fervently loyal lot. In fact, you’d be hard-pressed to find a more dedicated or passionate fanbase than the devotees of Hogwarts. So it comes as no surprise that when reports surfaced that author J.K. Rowling shared her regrets in an upcoming interview about the way she wrapped up some of the romantic storylines at the end of the book series, fans were immediately up in arms.

By now you’ve probably already processed the headline and absorbed the message: “J.K. Rowling says Hermione should have married Harry Potter, not Ron.” Depending on where you fall on the Harry Potter romantic fandom spectrum, this news was somewhere between interesting and NOOOOOOOOOOO!

There’s no definitive right or wrong regarding Rowling’s surprising admission, just various shades of grey. To Harry & Hermione shippers Rowling’s confession may be interpreted as a mea culpa or a literary “my bad,” while others view it as an unnecessary, and almost personal, attack on a sacrosanct franchise they spent countless hours supporting. To some Potter fanatics Rowling’s confession didn’t spoil the ending as much as it invalidated the premise.

At this point however the twist in the romantic Rubik’s cube known as Harry, Hermione and Ron isn’t as important as the central question: Does an author have the right to retroactively change their mind about their work? Do they owe something to the readers who’ve spent countless hours becoming emotionally invested in the universe they created? Did Rowling’s admission alter the way you feel about the Harry Potter franchise? Let’s discuss in the comments.
