Great news, nobody! An astonishing 22 years after his original country hit “Achy Breaky Heart” two-stepped its way into our lives, Billy Ray Cyrus has recorded a rap sequel to the surprise early ’90s classic. Billy Ray, father of provocative twerk temptress Miley Cyrus, teamed up with a rapper Buck 22, to record a modern version of the notorious “so bad it’s good” original. While the 1992 version of “Achy Breaky Heart” can be forgiven for being a victim of the perplexing decade of pop culture question marks known as the ’90s, this 2014 version — which of course features multiple mentions of Miley, aliens and twerking because, I mean, why not — is a little harder to justify.
Are we right? Wrong? Somewhere in the middle? Take a look and judge for yourself!
So where does this new version of “Achy Breaky Heart” rank on the all-time list? We have compiled the latest “Achy Breaky Heart” power rankings for you to enjoy:
1. The Chipmunks version of “Achy Breaky Heart”
We don’t tend to throw around worlds like “classic” and “transcended” with reckless abandon, but this classic song transcended music to become, quite possibly, the most significant piece of art to originate from the 20th century.
2. Billy Ray Cyrus’s 1992 “Achy Breaky Heart”
This song was unironically popular in 1992. How popular? A staggering 50% of students in my 4th grade grade class, myself included, listed “Achy Breaky Heart” as their favorite song. Number two on the list? “The Star Spangled Banner.” True yet very, very sad story.
3. A literal achy, breaky heart.
4. Former WWE wrestler Bret “The Hitman” Hart nursing a broken heart.
5. Buck 22 & Billy Ray Cyrus’ 2014 sequel to “Achy Breaky Heart”
Chin up, Billy C. Nowhere to go but up!
