It’s curtain call for David Letterman.
The often acerbic but always hilarious host announced yesterday that he plans to retire from Late Show when his contract expires with CBS in 2015. Craig Ferguson, Jay Leno, Conan O’Brien, and Chelsea Handler are just a few of the names being mentioned around this giant water cooler we call the internet as possible replacements, but no clear frontrunner as emerged.
After more than 32 years and almost 6,000 episodes, David Letterman’s unique brand of humor will be sorely missed. In honor of his impending retirement, we’ve come up with an abbreviated twist on the classic Letterman top 10 list. So, without further adieu, here are the top 5 reasons why we think he should rethink his retirement:
1. David Letterman Works The Drive-Thru
Letterman’s innovative remotes from the ’80s and ’90s helped shape late-night comedy and would go on to influence the next generation of hosts.
2. Stupid Pet Tricks
Before there was Youtube, there was the classic Letterman staple Stupid Pet Tricks.
3. David Letterman’s Bear Story
Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.
4. “Don’t Blame Conan”
During the late night imbroglio of 2010, Letterman hilariously offered his support to the eventually ousted Tonight Show host Conan O’Brien by subtly poking fun at his old comedic rival Jay Leno. Vintage Letterman.
5. David Letterman and Justin Bieber
Now that Letterman announced his retirement, may we humbly suggest an odd couple type sitcom in which Letterman and the Biebs are forced to live together? We could listen to these two banter all day!
What do you think? Are you sad to see Letterman go? Who would you like to see replace him?
