Do you have an idea for the perfect television sitcom? If so, pitching it has never been easier. NBC announced an exciting new crowd-sourcing comedy initiative yesterday called NBC Comedy Playground, which allows TV fans to directly pitch their show ideas (via video) to a panel of well-known actors and producers including Aziz Ansari, Seth Meyers, Mindy Kaling, and Amy Poehler. Up to 10 finalists will be selected, after which NBC will help each participant create a pilot presentation based on their pitch. Two winners will be selected and have their projects broadcast on NBC.
Sound exciting? NBC’s approach to discovering new talent inspired us to pitch a few ideas of our own. Here are 5 new sitcoms we’d love to see on NBC!
1. Tina Fey and Amy Poehler Buddy Cop Comedy
You don’t need algebra when simple arithmetic will do. Tina Fey + Amy Poehler = Success. Not only do they arguably possess two of the most incisive comedy minds in the entertainment business, they also have tons of chemistry. Place them together in an odd couple scenario and allow these comedic virtuosos to breathe new life into the cozy “by the book/loose cannon” partnership trope. If a Tina Fey/Amy Poehler buddy cop sitcom were announced today, Twitter would be forced to take a sick day. (Don’t believe us? Just take a look at the buzz surrounding their potential movie reunion.)
2. This fall on NBC Joseph Gordon-Levitt is Coming Home.
We’ve always been huge fans of the “protagonist returns home to their quirky small town” trope, but it has been met with mixed results in recent years. One hour dramas like the criminally underrated Ed, and to a lesser extent October Road, have employed this premise with a modicum of success, but a market for this relatable brand of humor exists.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt is forced to leave his glamorous city life to move back home and save the family business after his father runs off with a younger woman. An outcast in high school turned Lothario as an adult, JGL reunites with old friends, a former nemesis, and the one that got away.
3. The Untitled Anna Kendrick Project
Few celebrities can match the universal popularity of the endearing Anna Kendrick. While it would be admittedly difficult for the peacock to lasso this burgeoning superstar to a traditional sitcom deal, it would not be out of the realm of possibility to borrow the HBO model and utilize Kendrick in a True Detective inspired, part-time fashion. A 7-episode summer series where Kendrick portrays a down on her luck theater camp instructor would be appointment television. Singing, dancing, and the return of the awful waffle — a theater camp is the perfect vehicle for Kendrick to showcase her myriad of talents.
4. Clive Copenhagen: Licensed Karaoke Detective
This one practically pitches itself. C’mon, you’d watch. We’d all watch.
5. A Jessica St. Clair & Lennon Parham Mockumentary
Chemistry, as the C- on my 11th grade report card proves, cannot be faked. Frequent collaborators and longtime friends Jessica St. Clair and Lennon Parham excel when they share the screen together. The duo, who starred in NBC’s short-lived Best Friends Forever, will kickoff their USA series Playing House on April 29th.
But who’s to say they can’t pull double duty? NBC could double down on St. Clair and Parham with a loosely scripted mockumentary series featuring the fictitious behind-the-scenes drama of Playing House. The format would be ideally suited for veteran improvers St. Clair and Parham and would give the two best friends the opportunity to play passive-aggressive adversaries. If NBC is looking for outside the box programming, a fictitious, Curb Your Enthusiasm inspired behind-the-scenes series about a series is about as outside the box as network television gets.
Do you plan on submitting an idea to NBC’s new comedy initiative? What type of sitcom would you like to see on the network?
