Coming soon to a theater near you… Barbie? Mattel and Sony Pictures have announced that they are making a new live-action Barbie feature film. Written by former Sex and the City scribe Jenny Bicks, the movie is being described as a comedic and contemporary film that will see Barbie inhabit many of her iconic professions (princess, president, mermaid) to inspire change in the lives of everyone around her.

“We’ve always thought that the Barbie story had great potential, but a universe of possibilities opened up when Jenny, Walter and Laurie brought us their unexpected, clever, and truly funny concept,” Columbia Pictures president Hannah Minghella said in a statement.

Now that we know a movie is in the works, we’ve created a list of the five actresses we’d like to see portray the iconic character. Take a look!

1. Reese Witherspoon

As her turn in Legally Blonde proves, Witherspoon knows how to bring substance to a character that could otherwise be easily written off as plastic.

2. Kate Upton

Kate Upton stars alongside Cameron Diaz and Leslie Mann in the forthcoming comedy The Other Woman, could a starring role as Barbie be next?

3. Scarlett Johansson

From superhero to an intelligent computer operating system, Johansson is a seasoned vet at portraying a solid mix of characters.

4. Kaley Cuoco

The Big Bang Theory star has already proven she’s a comedy star on the small screen. What better role than Barbie to help her transition to the big screen?

5. Amanda Seyfried

She’s got the look, we know she has the comedic chops, so in a Barbie world, Seyfried is definitely our Barbie girl.

Production on the new Barbie live-action film is schedule to begin at the end of 2014. Who would you like to see portray Barbie?
