We begin with the best of intentions. Just one episode, and then I’ll go right to sleep. Okay, one more. You know what? Three episodes is a reasonable amount; one more can’t hurt. Wow, what a cliffhanger! I can’t possibly be expected to sleep without some sort of resolution!
Six episodes later your morning-self is cursing your nighttime-self as you stumble to start the day while attempting to hide the secret shame of falling victim to that slippery addictive slope known as the television binge-watch. I should know.
Three weeks ago I came across the CW series Arrow on Netflix. This seems like a fun series, I thought. I enjoy superheroes, I have nothing against arrows, why not give it a watch? Eight hazy hours later I strongly considered calling my editor and calling in sick due to my debilitating case of Arrow-gitis. I finished the first season, 23 episodes, in three magnificently lazy days, and quickly devoured the next 20 episodes of season two in a little under a week.
I was hooked. Arrow is a unique amalgamation of superheros, soap operas, and humor; kinda like if a mad scientist threw Superman, Seth Cohen, and a book of knock-knock jokes into a blender. Need an example? Watch this goose bumps inducing scene from last week’s episode:
See? It would have taken an arrow from The Hood himself to thwart my addiction.
I confessed my latest binge-watching endeavor, so now it’s your turn.
