We already know that one talented thespian will take home a trophy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmys this year, but who, we ask, will capture the all important Outstanding Yet Terrifying Use of a 1980s Style Truckers Hat award? And what about the coveted honor of Outstanding Cooking Tip NOT on the Food Network?
While we wait to find out which talented actors will be honored at the Aug. 25 ceremony, we concocted an exciting way to have a little fun with the award show categories — and we’re letting you play along.
Here are some outrageously wacky Emmy categories that recognize the very best in television this year (Outstanding Human/Feline Friendship? Yep, we’ve got that covered). Think you can come up with better? Suggest your own unique categories in the comments below or via Twitter using the hashtag #wackyEmmys.
Category: Outstanding Collection of Coats on a Political Drama Where It’s Seemingly Always Winter
Winner: Scandal’s Olivia Pope
Although the Game Of Thrones characters are consistently decked out in serious furs (vintage, so hot right now) and the Kardashians even have their own kollection full of koats, it’s Scandal‘s Olivia Pope who has an amazing jacket for every occasion. But seriously, is it ever summer on that show?
Category: Outstanding Cooking Tip NOT on the Food Network
Winner: Pretty Little Liars
Hanna and Ashley’s conversation about cheese on PLL earlier this season puts even Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio and Gail Simmons to shame.
Hanna: What is this?
Hanna: Does it melt?
Ashley: All cheese melts, Hanna.
Category: Outstanding Use of Product Placement to Embarrass a Presidential Candidate on the Campaign Trail
Winner: Veep’s Smarch
Though Modern Family’s Phil Dunphy declared a deeper love for his new iPad than his wife, and the producers of House of Cards seem to have stock in Apple, it’s Veep’s Selina Meyer whose endorsement of Smarch, the new smart watch from Clovis, that really shows the product’s (lack of) versatility. Nice work, Craaaaig!
Category: Outstanding Reintroduction of a Beloved Friday Night Lights Star
Winner: Ryan York on Parenthood
While we love watching FNL alum Adrianne Palicki (Tyra Collette) play doctor — and the one woman who is able to keep Will’s attention for longer than… well, at all — on NBC’s About a Boy, it’s Parenthood’s brilliant casting of Matt Lauria as Ryan York, the troubled veteran and love of Amber’s life (who — spoiler alert — may or may not have fathered a child with her in the season finale?), that has us clamoring for an FNL reunion like nobody’s business. (Hint, hint, NBC!)
Outstanding Portrayal of Human/Feline Friendship
Winner: Winston and Ferguson on New Girl
You lose, Dog Whisperer. Winston and his cuddly companion Ferguson taught us many important life lessons this season on New Girl — most notably that it’s completely normal to split a bowl of pasta with your cat.
