The Oscars might have big stars, the Emmys might have fun hosts and goofy skits, and the Grammys might have killer musical performances, but only the People’s Choice Awards has all three.
It’s not just the speeches, music, or even the fact that every single winner is picked by you, the people, that makes the People’s Choice Awards so exciting year after year though. No, what really makes the People’s Choice Awards the one show you’ll never want to miss is that it’s always packed with the kind of unpredictable, unforgettable moments that will have you talking all year-round.
With everything from breathless acceptance speeches to hosts willing to do just about anything for a laugh, it’s easy to see why the People’s Choice Awards are the most exciting event of the year. But on the off-chance you’re not already counting down the days until January 7, we’ve rounded up some of the biggest and best moments from some recent People’s Choice Awards to get you pumped for this year’s ceremony. If these don’t sell you, hosts Anna Faris and Allison Janney’s promise of aerial acrobatics should do the trick.
1. Johnny Depp Accepts “Actor of the Decade,” 2010
With a whopping 12 People’s Choice Awards on his mantlepiece, it’s clear that America really loves Johnny Depp — and from the looks of things, he clearly loves us back. When the man behind some of the most iconic film characters of all-time took to the stage to accept “Actor of the Decade,” he kept things short and sweet, closing out the show with a heartfelt message of gratitude for his fans. The feeling’s mutual, trust us.
2. Elton John Presents “Country Artist of the Year” to Taylor Swift, 2011
Constantly proving that she’s one of the most generous people in show business, Swift took some time out of her big moment back in 2011 to ensure that a music industry legend got some attention as well. Instead of launching straight into her speech, Swift stopped to congratulate Elton John on the recent birth of his son, and to thank him for presenting her award. Aw.
3. Morgan Freeman Wins “Favorite Movie Icon,” 2012
Under normal circumstances, a spontaneous vocabulary lesson is probably your worst nightmare; yet somehow, when Morgan Freeman is standing onstage, running through the many definitions of the word “icon,” it’s nothing less than a delight.
4. Sandra Bullock Wins the First “Favorite Humanitarian” Award, 2013
Sandra Bullock might have become America’s Sweetheart through a perfect combination of charm, talent, and humor, but it’s through her incredible charity work that she’s truly proven why she’s so deserving of the title. So, it was with predictable grace and humility that she accepted her award, and introduced the world to the students and faculty of Warren Easton High School and all of the amazing work they do. In that moment, everyone wanted to be friends with Sandra Bullock.
5. Beth Behrs’ “Baby Got Back” Mic Drop, 2014
When you’re hosting the People’s Choice Awards, you need to be game for just about anything… and no host has proven that better than Beth Behrs, who dropped some sick beats and some goofy dance moves when she performed a hilarious rendition of “Baby Got Back.” Because she’s a natural born performer, she closed out the number with a mic drop and a strut offstage. Now that’s how you host an award show.
6. Ellen Degeneres Wins Her 14th People's Choice Award, 2014
Is there a person alive who doesn't love Ellen Degeneres? The answer is no, at least according to her trophy case. But where some people might get cocky or self-righteous with all of those People's Choice Awards under their belts, Degeneres simply continues to prove why she's the most charming woman in daytime television. Think this year will be lucky number 15?
7. Queen Latifah's Opening Skit, 2011
Queen Latifah can do it all: she acts, she sings, she raps, she hosts, and along the way she makes us laugh — a lot. That's exactly what she did back in 2011, when she kicked off the night with a skit featuring some of TV's biggest stars (we're talking Emily Deschanel, Kathy Griffin, and more!). Allison Janney and Anna Faris are going to have a tough act to follow this year.
8. Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev Win "Favorite Onscreen Chemistry," 2014
Though we've tuned in week after week to watch Damon and Elena's romance on The Vampire Diaries, the real-life love affair between Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder was kept a secret. Which is why the two surprised fans everywhere when they finally acknowledged their relationship (and subsequent break up) in their acceptance speech with a winning combination of class and humor. It's good to know that no matter what goes down in Mystic Falls, these two are still on friendly terms.
