Update 7/17/2015: Well, that was a short-lived dream. According to new reports, Princess Diaries 3 is not in development. In fact, it’s not even close. Full details here.
It’s time to head back to Genovia.
According to the The Tracking Board, Walt Disney Pictures has decided to dust off the crown and greenlight a third film in the Princess Diaries franchise.
The 21st century tale based off the Meg Cabot novel of the same name chronicled ugly duckling high schooler Mia Thermopolis (played by Anne Hathaway), as she became the unlikely princess of Genovia. The beloved 2001 film introduced the world to Hathaway and spawned a sequel, 2004’s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Now, 11 years later, Disney is revisiting the story.
No word yet on potential plotlines for Princess Diaries 3 or if the original cast — including Oscar-winner Julie Andrews, who played the queen in the original film, will reprise their respective roles.
Hathaway has yet to indicate whether or not she’ll be involved in another film, but you never know in Hollywood, right? If Mia can catch a falling star and put it in her pocket, she can certainly make a cameo in the third installment
The Tracking Board also reports that Debra Chase of Martin Chase Productions will be returning to produce the third film.
Let’s hope the new installment makes for a three-peat at the box office. Judging by how much buzz this news is generating, Disney should have no problem.
