Xena: Warrior Princess fans let out a triumphant battle cry yesterday when The Hollywood Reporter announced that a reboot of the action/adventure series was in the works at NBC. But Xena herself, Lucy Lawless, extinguished the passionate fandom flames when she took to Twitter the same day to set the record straight.
“Sorry, friends! news of a #Xena reboot is just a rumor,” Lawless tweeted. “I’d love it to happen one day but it’s still in the wishful thinking stage.”
According to the original THR report, the proposed “modern reboot” would feature a new Xena who’d possess the “charisma and charm of Lawless and the smarts of The Hunger Games’ Katniss,” with producers looking to cast a “sophisticated and smart superhero for a new generation.”
While the reboot may still be in the rumor phase, Lawless admitted at this year’s Comic-Con that she’s been pitching a Xena comeback.
“I don’t know what the holdup is,” Lawless told HitFix. “It’s about who’s got the rights [to the series]. I think they just… find who’s got the rights. Freakin’ pay it. It’s better to have 80 percent of something than 100 percent of nothing. Don’t waste this opportunity. Reinvigorate that franchise. They’re fools not to bring it back.”
If the reboot were to move forward, Lawless’ involvement as the eponymous Warrior Princess might be a bit tricky considering (spoiler alert!) her character died in the series finale.
