In the forthcoming drama Our Brand is Crisis, Bullock portrays “Calamity” Jane Bodine, a brilliant but deeply damaged campaign strategist who attempts to use American political techniques to sway a presidential race in South America and defeat her professional nemesis, Pat Candy (Billy Bob Thornton).
Based on Rachel Boynton’s 2005 documentary of the same name, Our Brand is Crisis found its Academy Award-winning leading lady in a very unusual manner. Bullock’s Gravity co-star George Clooney, who along with Grant Heslov, served as a producer on the film, was originally set to star in the political thriller, until The Heat actress became interested in the script.
“About two-and-a-half years ago I put out feelers saying, ‘I’m not reading anything I’m excited about,’” Bullock told Entertainment Weekly. “‘Are there any male roles out there that [the filmmakers] don’t mind switching to female?’”
And the rest is history!
“You’re a fighter, Jane, and I’m giving you another shot at the title.”
Also starring Anthony Mackie, Joaquim de Almeida, Ann Dowd, Scoot McNairy, and Zoe Kazan, Our Brand is Crisis arrives in theaters October 30.
