There are certainly no shortage of superheroes in Hollywood these days, but according to Supergirl star Melissa Benoist, there’s one thing that sets her caped crusader aside from the rest.

When we caught up with Benoist at the CBS Upfronts in New York City earlier this summer, the actress explained that the thing that makes her character, Kara Danvers, stand out from other superheroes is that she’s not perfect.

“There’s a humanity and a kind of flawed nature in Supergirl that you don’t necessarily see in these superhero or DC or Marvel comic book stories,” said Benoist. “[Executive producer] Greg Berlanti said to me in one of my auditions that she’s the Annie Hall of superheroes, so she’s a little more eccentric and there’s a quirkiness to her, and this kind of coming of age feeling to [the show].”

Though Supergirl has yet to premiere, a glimpse of that quirky nature Benoist is referring to can definitely be seen in the extended first look of CBS’ upcoming pilot.

We’re kind of digging the fact that Kara is unabashedly excitable about the extent of her newfound powers, and we’re definitely excited to see more of Supergirl once the show finally airs!
Supergirl premieres on CBS on Monday, October 26 at 8:30 p.m.
