Ellen DeGeneres may be known for the fun hijinks she gets up to on the Ellen Show, but now she’s being recognized for the tireless effort she puts into trying to make the world a better place.

During the People’s Choice Awards on Wednesday night, the beloved daytime talk show host was honored as “Favorite Humanitarian” for her continued plight to help communities in need and for tirelessly working to raise awareness for organizations and charities that strive to make a difference in people’s lives.

Comedic Actress Melissa McCarthy took the stage to “publicly declare [her] love and admiration” for DeGeneres in a moving speech detailing just why she deserves to be honored as this year’s “Favorite Humanitarian.”

“[Ellen] is one of the very few people in this universe that can make me laugh so hard that I en up in tears and then within seconds, do something so generous that I end up crying my eye out for a completely different reason,” said McCarthy in her emotional speech. “She approaches every act of giving with a strength of a determined warrior.”

After, DeGeneres took the stage to accept the award and delivered a speech peppered with funny zingers.

“Would I call myself the Mother Theresa of talk shows? No, but I’m sure someone out there has!” joked DeGeneres at one point in her speech before getting serious about how important it is to show kindness to others.

"I think kindness is something that we should all have…we need more of that out there,” said DeGeneres. “My wish is for everyone to know that we all really, really love one another. Deep down, we all love one another and we need to get back to that. we need more of that in the world.”

Finally, DeGeneres said she wanted to end things off by making everyone watching happy.

"I would like to make you all happy so I brought a shirtless photo of Chris Hemsworth to share,” said DeGeneres to a chorus of laughs and whoops from the audience. “You’re welcome! Thank you so much! Be kind to one another!"

As the recipient of this year’s honor, DeGeneres chose St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as the beneficiary of Walgreen’s annual donation. Additionally, Walgreens will make a $1 donation to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for every CoverGirl, Pantene, Crest, and Oral-B 3DWhite product sold at Walgreens, Walgreens.com, and Duane Reade between January 6 and January 9.

DeGeneres joins past recipients of the same honor which include actor Ben Affleck, who was awarded in 2015 for his work with the Eastern Congo Initiative, and singer Jennifer Hudson, who was honored in 2014 for her work with the Julian D. King Foundation.
