Tyler Blackburn Says Ashley Benson Did Not Have The Best Reaction To Caleb And Spencer’s Coupling On ‘PLL’

The latest season of Pretty Little Liars has already thrown a few curveballs our way, but the one big reveal that’s definitely got fans up in arms is a shift in who’s dating who after the five-year time jump. We’re talking of course about the newly-revealed romance between Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) and Spencer (Troian Bellisario).

The idea of Spaleb is one that’s that’s severely unsettling to all the diehard Haleb shippers who were hoping that despite the fact that Hanna (Ashley Benson) has found love in the form of her new Australian fiancee, Hanna and Caleb would find their way back to each other eventually.

And if the idea of Spencer and Caleb was hard to take, don’t worry, PLL fans, because you’re not the only ones who were a bit shocked over Rosewood’s new couple!

In a recent interview with Vulture, actor Tyler Blackburn, who plays Caleb, revealed that even the cast had mixed feelings about the matter. Specifically, the actor let slip that both Ashley Benson and Keegan Allen (who play Spaleb’s respective exes, Hanna and Toby) both had some interesting reactions after reading the scripts that revealed the new romance.

“Ashley was really upset. Keegan was a little more stoic about it, but I think he was pretty upset as well,” revealed Blackburn. “They have to go with the flow, though, right?”

Despite the mixed reactions from the cast and fans, Blackburn is actually really excited to be getting some more screen time with Bellisario, whom he loves working with.

“[Troian] has a good, specific approach that I really respect, so any time she and I were able to work together previously, we’ve really enjoyed it,” said Blackburn. “We would actually joke around together and be like, ‘So, how do we get more time together on screen?’”

It was then that Blackburn said the showrunners clued both of them in about their impending coupling. “I was like, ‘What!’ There was a running joke that we could hear the screams of the fans hating every moment during all of our scenes,” said Blackburn.

Finally, Blackburn teased that soon we’ll get more of a backstory as to how Caleb and Spencer came to be. “It’s not as much fireworks as it was with Caleb and Hanna, but it’s really beautiful,” teased Blackburn of the upcoming Spaleb flashbacks.

Regardless of whether or not you ship Spaleb, we can’t be the only ones looking forward to finding out exactly how Caleb and Spencer got together!
