It looks like Princess Diaries 3 is a lock.
After years of clamoring from fans, Anne Hathaway is reportedly ready to rule Genovia once more. Director Garry Marshall confirmed Hathaway’s interest in reprising her role as teen-turned-queen Mia during an interview with People.
“I was with Anne Hathaway a few weeks ago, it looks like we want to do Princess Diaries 3 in Manhattan,” Marshall said. “Anne Hathaway is very pregnant, so we have to wait until she has the baby and then I think we’re going to do it.”
Though there’s no word yet on which other cast members will join Hathaway in the follow-up, fans have good reason to hope that Chris Pine could return to his role as Mia’s suitor, Nicholas Devereux, from Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement.
The Star Trek actor expressed his interest (albeit in a tongue-and-cheek way) in suiting up as the film’s resident Prince Charming again during a Q/A with fans back in January. Marshall, however, hinted that Pine’s involvement was not a sure thing. When asked if there was a role for the actor in a third film, Marshall said, “Maybe. He’s quite big now, you know.”
News of another film comes as a welcome surprise for fans of the franchise. Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement was released in 2004, and since then there’s been plenty of speculation about whether another film could happen. In June of 2015, reports that Princess Diaries 3 was in production were quickly shutdown.
Julie Andrews, who played Mia’s royal grandmother in both films, had also previously said that a trilogy was unlikely.
“I would never say no because Disney is so wonderfully clever and inventive, but I would think they’ll just stay with just the two because of Annie,” said Andrews during a 2012 interview.
Turns out Annie was just waiting for the right time to wear the crown again — and we couldn’t be happier for it.
