‘Vampire Diaries’ Boss Julie Plec Says Her Series Finale Plan Still Holds

A lot has changed since The Vampire Diaries first premiered on The CW, but one thing that’s stayed constant for a while now is showrunner Julie Plec’s vision for how she’d like the series to end.

In a new interview with Vulture, Plec reiterated that regardless of all the twists and turns the series has gone through, the ending she’s got planned in her head still works.

“Ever since [Nina Dobrev] said goodbye, I’ve had a pretty clear ending in my head, which thankfully works wherever I put it,” revealed the showrunner. “If it’s next year at the end of season eight, great. If it’s the end of season nine, great.”

Though fans have been speculating what’s ahead for the series now that both Ian Somerhalder and Kat Graham have announced they’re exiting after season 8, it’s clear from Plec’s comments that their departures won’t alter how TVD will ultimately come to a close. In fact, according to Plec, the only thing that really isn’t set in stone is the series of events to get to the finale she’ll eventually show us.

“Whatever gets us to that moment will change a lot of the next year or two, but that actual last sequence is pretty written in my head already,” said Plec.

As sad as we’ll be to say goodbye to The Vampire Diaries at some point, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing what Julie Plec’s mysterious final scene entails!

The Vampire Diaries airs Fridays at 8 p.m. on The CW.
