News that Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) and Wolowitz (Simon Helberg) are expecting their very own bundle of joy on The Big Bang Theory may have shocked fans, but as it turns out, they weren’t the only ones who were pleasantly surprised! The huge plot twist is something that even some of the sitcom’s very own stars didn’t see coming.

When we caught up with Mayim Bialik at PaleyFest last month, the actress, who brings Amy Farrah Fowler to life, confessed that she was shocked to discover the showrunners had chosen to include that particular arc into the ninth season.

“Honestly, I was surprised that Howard and Bernadette were pregnant. I thought we might see it in season 10, but I was kind of surprised they brought it up in 9,” Bialik told People’s Choice.

Despite the fact that The Big Bang Theory is set to add a new, pint-sized member to the mix, Bialik also revealed that fans shouldn’t expect a baby Wolowitz to completely take over every storyline from this point forward.

“There’s going to be a lot of episodes about that, there’s going to be a lot of episodes not about that,” said Bialik. “It feels like we’ve got a good mix going on so far.

Bialik wasn’t the only one thrown for a loop when the writers wrote in a baby for Howard and Bernadette. Kunal Nayyar, who plays Raj on the series, also revealed that he had no idea the writers were planning to introduce a bundle of joy for everyone to interact with.

“Having a baby— when I first read that I was like, completely in the dark!” said Nayyar. “Then you start thinking, we’re going to have a baby now. That was very shocking to me.”

According to Nayyar, throwing a baby into the mix is a great example of how The Big Bang Theory writers are so great at keeping everyone on their toes.

“The writers have such a good, winning formula. I wouldn’t even dare to try to dream about anything different,” Nayyar told People’s Choice. “Every time I open a script, it’s like Christmas morning. It’s like, oh my God, I get to do this! I get to do that! So I’m very lucky.”
