6 Things You Never Knew About ‘Sabrina, The Teenage Witch’

With the recent buzz that Melissa Joan Hart may reprise her role as Sabrina Spellman, there’s no better time to revisit the late ’90s early 2000s classic Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

Life as a teenager is difficult, and discovering you’re a witch is no picnic either. Put the two together and you have literal TGIF magic. Sabrina and company enchanted viewers for over 160 episodes from 1996-2003. While the cast went through a number of changes during the show’s seven season run, the heart of the series never wavered as Sabrina attempted to balance both her social and mystical life. Oh, and there was a talking cat, too.

Think you know everything there is to know about Sabrina, Hilda, Zelda, and Salem? Find out by taking a look at these six surprising facts about Sabrina, the Teenage Witch!

1. Britney Spears made a guest appearance on Sabrina, the Teenage Witch.

Spears appeared in a season four episode in which she was summoned to give Sabrina a private concert. Britney performed her single “(You Drive Me) Crazy” on the episode, which was also featured on the soundtrack to Hart’s 1999 teen rom-com, Drive Me Crazy. Hart also made an appearance in Spears’ music video for “(You Drive Me) Crazy.”

2. There was some on-set tension between Melissa Joan Hart and… Salem the cat?

Much to the chagrin of Hart, there were a number of live feline stand-ins on the set of Sabrina, as well as an animatronic Salem.

“I’m a dog person,” Hart told Vulture back in 2013. “Being around that Salem cat too much … the set was covered in cat food. So yeah, I can’t do cats anymore.”

3. Why did Sabrina’s best friend Jenny vanish after the first season?

After having a prominent role in the first season, actress Michelle Beaudoin was conspicuously missing from subsequent episodes. Hart explained that a lot of the show’s casting decisions were based on the audience’s reaction.

“Season by season our show’s cast would come and go based on audience reaction, and sometimes there’d be dispute about contracts and negotiations as far as payment goes for certain actors,” Hart explained to The Huffington Post. “Also, there’s a lot of politics that go on behind the scenes, like when a writer develops a certain character they get paid on the [likeness] of that character for every episode. If a writer develops a character, but that writer’s gone and there’s bad blood, they might get rid of the character they developed, so they didn’t have to pay them anymore. There are a lot of things that go into that situation.”

4. Teenage witch or vampire slayer? Sarah Michelle Gellar was also up for the role of Sabrina.

Melissa Joan Hart was offered the role of Sabrina after Sarah Michelle Gellar dropped out to star in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Instead of slaying vampires with Giles, Gellar could have been casting spells with Salem!

5. Is Harvey destined to turn into a ball of wax? According to Sabrina, yep!

In the Sabrina-verse, a mortal may turn into a ball of wax if they lay eyes on their paranormal child, which happened to Sabrina’s mom in the season six episode “The Whole Ball of Wax.” Since Harvey (a mortal) and Sabrina end up together, does that mean he’s in danger of suffering the same fate if the pair have children?

“I guess so, yeah,” Hart said in an interview. “I mean, he was like a real threat in the witch world, so I would say that’s probably an episode of a spinoff somewhere.”

Loving a witch is never easy.

6. Speaking of the season six episode “The Whole Ball of Wax,” a future Grammy-winner appeared in the episode as an extra.

Inaugural American Idol-winner Kelly Clarkson made a brief background appearance in the episode portraying one of Sabrina’s high school classmates.
