It’s official. Nathan Fillion will be returning to ABC’s Castle…that is, if Castle itself returns to TV come fall.

Variety was the first to report that the crime show was in negotiations with Fillion on a new contract for the tentative 9th season. With the actor’s future now sealed, the network will make a decision about the show today (May 6). And with the now protagonist signed on for another year, things are looking up for a green light on another season.

If the series gets picked up for another season, it’ll be the first time viewers see Richard Castle (Fillion) without his partner-in-crime, NYPD detective Kate Beckett, who is played by Stana Katic. A People’s Choice Awards winner, it was announced last month that Katic would be exiting the show at the end of the current season.
Since 2009, Castle and Beckett have carried the drama as the dynamic duo who at first couldn’t stand each other but grew to love each other. It’ll be interesting to see how writers phase out Beckett as season 8 wraps.
The season finale of Castle is scheduled for May 13th.
