Variety reports that The Maze Runner and Teen Wolf star is in negotiations to play the title character in CBS Films’ American Assassin. Directed by Michael Cuesta (Kill the Messenger), the film centers on a Cold War veteran (Keaton) tasked with training a black ops recruit, Mitch Rapp (O’Brien), devastated by the loss of his fiancée to a terrorist attack. The two are eventually dispatched on a joint mission with a lethal Turkish agent in a quest to prevent a mysterious operative from starting World War III in the Middle East.
The character of Mitch Rapp is from author Vince Flynn’s immensely successful series of political thriller novels. The film is based on Flynn’s book American Assassin, which is just one of the fourteen novels set in the world of counterterrorism operative Mitch Rapp.
The news of O’Brien’s potential starring role comes as the actor is still recovering from injuries he suffered during an accident on the set of Maze Runner: The Death Cure back in March. Producers recently announced that work on the film was being suspended to allow O’Brien more time to recover.
Production on American Assassin is scheduled to begin this summer.
