Producer Simon Kinberg, who referred to Wolverine 3 as a “very radical, bold, different Wolverine” film during the press day for X-Men: Apocalypse in London, confirmed that unlike 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine and 2013’s The Wolverine, Hugh Jackman’s final Wolverine film will be R-rated.
“It takes place in the future, and as you and others have reported, it is an R-rated movie,” Kinberg told Collider’s Steve Weintraub. “It’s violent, it’s kind of like a western in its tone. It’s just a very cool, different film.”
Wolverine’s tonal shift from PG-13 to R-rated can hardly be considered a surprise after Marvel’s Rated R darling Deadpool surpassed The Matrix Reloaded to become the highest-grossing R-rated film in box office history. We already know that Wolverine and Deadpool make worthy adversaries, but is their historic battle about to continue at the box office?
Also starring Boyd Holbrook, Richard E. Grant, Stephen Merchant, and Eriq Lasalle, Wolverine 3 is currently scheduled for a March 3, 2017 release.
