The latest episode of Game of Thrones gave us yet another peek into Ned Stark’s past, and this one was particularly significant in helping fans understand more about the former Lord of Winterfell.
In a new interview with Access Hollywood, actor Robert Aramayo, who plays young Ned in the series, spoke about Sunday night’s flashback in which fans see Ned face off against Ser Arthur Dayne. The moment is very important because the story of how Ned defeated Dayne is one Bran grew up hearing, so when he comes to the realization that it wasn’t his father who finished him off, it comes as a bit of a shock.
According to Aramayo, the scene may be the key to understanding how Ned grew into the man he ultimately became.
“I do feel like that’s a lesson learned for Ned,” said Aramayo of the moment which ends up playing out differently than what Bran expected. “I think that speaks to how honor began to sort of operate for Ned and I would argue that in the [subsequent] years, he would live his life from an honorable place, having been dishonored in this moment.”
The entire flashback scene ends in a cliffhanger. After the sword fight, Ned hears a scream and makes his way up to the Tower of Joy. Just as Bran’s about to follow and find out what lies within, the Three-Eyed Raven pulls him back into the real world. It looks like the time wasn’t right for Bran to find out the secrets the tower hold, but we’re looking forward to learning more about Ned Stark’s past as the series progresses.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO
