Abbie Mill’s shocking exit during Sleepy Hollow’s big season finale may have shocked fans, but Fox is standing by the decision to kill the character off.

During a conference call with reporters, Fox CEO Dana Walden elaborated on actress Nicole Beharie’s departure from the series, saying the decision to kill Abbie was necessary.

“There were a variety of factors that lead to the end of the season,” said Walden according to TV Line. “It was not a decision that we wanted to make initially. We ended up being put in a situation where that was a decision that needed to be made.”

Walden also revealed that despite the controversy surrounding the decision to continue the show without Beharie, FOX firmly believes that doing so will open the series up to a new possibilities in season 4.

“While there was backlash [to the season 4 renewal], there was also a tremendous amount of enthusiasm from fans about the show coming back and about Tom having the ability to be the center of the series and discovering new dynamics and new relationships,” said Walden. “It’s a very original premise and we felt like it had greater life in it and that there was no reason to end it.”
