Grey’s Anatomy said goodbye to another beloved cast member last week after Sara Ramirez, who plays Dr. Callie Torres, revealed via Twitter that she was taking some time off from the series. If you were shocked to discover that Ramirez was set to exit, it turns out, you’re not alone.
In a recent interview at Vulture Fest in New York City on Sunday, showrunner Shonda Rhimes opened up about Ramirez’s unexpected departure from Grey’s Anatomy. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Rhimes told those in attendance that she found out Ramirez was moving on “maybe three days” before fans far and wide heard it from the actress herself.
“I had a different plan going and when Sara came and said, ‘I really need to take this break,’ I was sort of lucky that we had shot the end of the season with her going to New York,” said Rhimes.
Despite the fact that Rhimes wasn’t given enough notice to plan a proper goodbye for Callie, the showrunner said she was really happy with where they ended up leaving things off for Dr. Torres for the time being.
“I felt really good that we had shot that ending and that she said she wanted to take this break and we were able to give it to her because I love the woman and I want to do everything for her,” continued Rhimes. “It all worked out in a sense.”
Grey’s Anatomy returns to ABC in the fall.
