Lady Gaga Reveals How She Got Her Stage Name

Lady Gaga may be larger than life, but the pop star wants all her devoted Little Monsters to know that there’s a big difference between who she really is and who she is as “Gaga.”

The Mother Monster opened up about her on-stage persona in a sit-down chat with actress Jamie Lee Curtis for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series. During the interview, Gaga explained why her on stage persona is really a person that has been created from other people’s perceptions of who Gaga is.

“Gaga is this stronger individual part of myself that I discovered being young in New York— loving music, meeting with young artists, working with musicians, with writers, studying the scene, and being involved in the lifestyle,” explained the pop star. “I started to call myself Gaga. [It] was the nickname I had at my best.”

Later on in the interview, Gaga also revealed that while she considers her pop star persona to be a creation, she can’t take full credit for bringing her to life.

“It’s other people that have created [it] through what I’ve made,” said Gaga. “Their perception of what Gaga is, is a separate entity from me.”
