The character of Superman has been portrayed by many actors but one surprising leading man who almost donned the red and blue for a mid-2000s reboot of the Man of Steel is Jude Law.

The Sherlock Holmes star dropped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert earlier this week to talk about his brief cup of coffee as The Last Son of Krypton. Law was considered for the highly sought-after role in an unproduced Warner Bros. Superman script, Flyby, written by a young J.J. Abrams with Brett Ratner attached to direct.

“I was approached, and at the time, it didn’t float my boat,” Law told Colbert. “I just didn’t want to go there. I’m an Englishman, and I don’t know; it just didn’t seem to fit. I was always worried about the outfit. I just didn’t fancy it.”

Didn’t fancy playing Superman?! That kind of talk is enough to make former Smallville star Tom Welling cry.

While Law never got the chance to play Superman, he did receive the opportunity of a lifetime when he got to try on the iconic suit.

“So I take the suit into the bathroom, and I’m putting it on and then I look around, I’m in the mirror and suddenly… I’m Superman,” Law continued. “And the music kinda comes in like da, da, dada dada da da, right? I stood there, and then I had this picture of me in that costume on posters all over the world and I was like… ’no way,’ and I unzipped it. I was Superman for two minutes, that’s enough.”
