Fans of the former One Direction singer were sad to hear that Malik had decided to cancel his highly anticipated set at Capital FM’s Summertime Ball at Wembley Stadium on Saturday (June 11). Malik took to his Twitter to explain why he wouldn’t be appearing at the music festival and in a vulnerable move, opened up about his struggle with anxiety.
“I flew into the UK last night to appear in my home country in front of my family, friends, and most importantly, my UK fans,” explained Malik in the lengthy post. “Unfortunately my anxiety that has haunted me throughout the last few months around live performances has gotten the better of me…with the magnitude of the event, I have suffered the worst anxiety of my career.”
The singer then went on to apologize to all the fans who were waiting to see him but stressed how important it was for him to be honest with why he was skipping out on the event.
“I promise I will do my best to make this up to everybody I’ve let down today,” continued Malik. “I know those who suffer anxiety will understand and I hope those who don’t can empathize with my situation.”
In a touching move, Gigi Hadid took to Twitter to respond to Zayn’s heartfelt moment of honesty with her own lengthy reply. In her note, the supermodel told the singer how proud she was that he had decided to open up to his fans about his personal struggle with anxiety.
“You made the best of the situation and have given your fans an opportunity to understand you better as a performer,” wrote Hadid. “We are all here to support you and make each experience easier. Your talent and good heart will never lead you wrong.”
As much as we’d love to see Zayn hit the stage, for now, we’re sending positive vibes his way and wish him all the best as he moves forward in an effort to come to grips with his anxiety.
