There’s no denying that Finding Dory swam into audience’s hearts when it hit theaters over the weekend but chances are, in your excitement for the Finding Nemo sequel, you missed some of its more hard-to-spot references to other pop culture staples.
In an interview with Collider, director Andrew Stanton and producer Linsey Collins revealed that they ended up adding a number of subtle references to Finding Dory that have nothing to do with other Disney-Pixar movies.
For one of them, Collins and Stanton drew inspiration from a hilarious theory posted by Mashable that brings forth the idea that every Pixar movie exists in the same universe as Die Hard.
“There’s a lot of theories online that all of our universes are connected, so somebody made a spoof of how we put Die Hard in all of our movies and it was very funny,” Stanton told Collider. “We thought it was tongue-in-cheek. So we said, ‘Alright, let’s do it,’ so we made two Die Hard references in this movie.”
