There’s a new Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them featurette out today and it gives fans their best look into Newt Scamander’s world yet!
For starters, the new footage provides a glimpse at some of the unique creatures we’ll be seeing Newt (Eddie Redmayne) interact with in the movie. We’ve already been introduced to the adorable kleptomaniac known as the niffler, but in the featurette, fans can get a good first look at another magical creature they’ll remember from the books: the bowtruckle.
For those who need a bit of a magical creatures refresher, bowtruckles are twig-like tree dwellers who serve as guardians for the trees in which they live. They’re most often found guarding trees whose wood is used to make wands and are relatively peaceful, unless you’re trying to do harm to the trees in which they dwell.
The featurette also introduces a mysterious silver egg. We’re not quite sure what’s going to hatch out of it, but whatever it is, it’s enough for Newt to take action when he’s told it’s about to hatch!
Finally, throughout the trailer, author J.K. Rowling sheds a bit more insight into just how awful the relationship between Wizards and Muggles (or No-Majs) really is in the United States during the 1920s.
“I know that you have rather backwards laws about relations with non-magic people,” says Newt when Porpentina asks if he’s aware of the rules. “You’re not meant to befriend them, you can’t marry them which seems wildly absurd.”
Considering that we can already tell Newt and Jacob’s journeys are tied, despite the fact that Jacob is a No-Maj, we’re betting these harsh rules about Wizard-Muggle relations are bound to come into play throughout the course of the story.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens in theaters on November 18.
