Fans of The Fosters, now in its fourth season on Freeform, have come to expect drama, drama, and well, more drama from the series, but no one could’ve predicted the intensity that was the first two episodes of this season.

In the season premiere last week, Mariana (played by Cierra Ramirez) found herself dealing with a school lockdown, while she herself was locked out of all the classrooms by accident and was hiding in a bathroom, alone and scared, an actual fear Ramirez has.

“A fear of mine, actually, all through school was that I would be in a situation like that where we’d be having that drill and I wouldn’t be in a classroom or let in anywhere to be safe,” Ramirez told People’s Choice on the phone last week. “Like, what do you do in that situation? So, to kind of live vicariously through Mariana, it was super tense and crazy. I mean, the emotions were there. It was just crazy intense.”

That “crazy intense” premiere episode was followed by a just as intense (if not more) second episode, in which Mariana’s gun-toting boyfriend Nick (played by Louis Hunter) was nowhere to be found. The episode culminated in Mariana trying to calm Nick during a face-to-face meeting, while also trying not completely break down herself. Two episodes in a row, Mariana’s been in very chaotic and intense situations and, according to Ramirez, Mariana won’t be getting over the trauma anytime soon.

“This already happening in the beginning is going to set the mood for the rest of the season for Mariana,” Ramirez said. “It’s going to be hard for her to move on. It’s going to put her in a dark place.”

For those hoping that Mariana’s ex-boyfriend Mat (played by Jordan Rodrigues) will be there to help her through this dark time, you might be waiting a while, at least if Mariana listens to Ramirez’s advice.

“There was an undeniable attraction [between Mat and Mariana] and they will always have love for each other, but they were being very respectable of the person that they were with at the time’s feelings. And she chose Nick. It’s going to be hard for her to move on from something like this with Nick, especially when her heart was really with Mat,” Ramirez said. “And while I think she needs some time to just be with herself, we’ll see how Mariana feels about that.”
