This ‘Harry Potter’ Fan Theory Might Explain Why Kreacher Was So Awful

There’s no denying that Kreacher is one of the most memorable Harry Potter characters around. With his surly attitude and his distaste for Muggle-borns, the house elf made an impression on readers straight from the get-go.

Kreacher may have been terrible to everyone he came across — including his former master, Sirius Black— but a new Harry Potter fan theory suggests that perhaps, there was more to Kreacher’s nastiness than meets the eye.

All this time, Potter fans assumed that Kreacher’s distaste for mudbloods and their sympathizers was born out of his loyalty to Sirius’ mother, but Reddit user kaptinkracker thinks otherwise.

In the theory, the fan writes that perhaps Kreacher was so awful because he was in fact in possession of Slytherin’s locket, which fans will remember, housed one of Voldemort’s horcruxes.

“It is shown that the horcrux makes Ron very jealous and angry when he later has possession of the horcrux for only a short time,” writes kaptinkracker. “Therefore, when Regulus Black gave Kreacher the horcrux to hold onto, it turned Kreacher bad.”

Ultimately, the theory is based on the idea that if the locket, while housing the horcrux could alter the perception of the wearer, just like it did with Ron, then it’s plausible it could have done the same with Kreacher.

“It makes Kreacher hate mudbloods even more and disrespect Hermione way more than he would have if he didn’t have the horcrux,” continued kaptinkracker.

The idea that perhaps the locket amplified what Kreacher may have already felt definitely makes us see the old house elf in a new light.
