There’s a new doctor checking into Code Black!

Rob Lowe is joining the cast of the CBS medical drama in season 2, the network announced last night (July 5).

The Hollywood vet will play Colonel Ethan Willis, a military doctor who gets transplanted from his station in Afghanistan to teach budding MD’s about combat treatment at Angels Memorial Hospital. Willis’ is described to having an “aggressive, rule-breaking style,” which excites some of his coworkers but annoys others.

Looks like going against the grain will cause some friction in the new season!

Lowe will join the ensemble cast, which includes Luis Guzman, Melanie Chandra, Harry Ford, Benjamin Hollingsworth, Jillian Murray, Boris Kodjoe, William Allen Young, and of course, Marcia Gay Harden, who plays his superior, Dr. Leanne Rorish. Lowe’s casting comes on the heels of the series’ surprising decision to cut leads Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville ahead of season 2.

“No answer I give will be satisfying to either of us. It sucks. I’m with you on that,” Code Black executive producer Michael Seitzman wrote on Twitter in June after it was announced that both Raza Jaffrey and Bonnie Somerville had been dropped from the show. “It sucks for sure. But I’m still excited about the new characters we haven’t talked about yet!”

We’re guessing Lowe’s character was among the new ones he was eager to share with fans.

Lowe is obviously no stranger to the small screen. Fans of the actor will remember his Emmy-nominated performance on NBC’s The West Wing as well as his stints on Parks & Recreation and Brothers & Sisters. Most recently, Lowe appeared on the 2015 freshman FOX comedy, The Grinder, as a hot shot TV lawyer who moves back to his hometown to take over the family firm. Though The Grinder showed promise, the comedy only lasted one season.

Lowe will make his debut as Dr. Willis when Code Black returns on September 28.
