While speaking with reporters at the premiere of Jason Bourne, Damon admitted he’d consider entering the superhero fray on one condition: His longtime friend and current Caped Crusader Ben Affleck is behind the camera to direct him.
“If [Affleck] was directing me, I’d jump on it in a New York minute. I’d love to work with Ben,” Damon said as reported by the Irish Examiner. “The problem with Ben is every time he directs a movie, he gives himself the best role in it, so until he’s willing to give up the best role to one of his friends, we’re not going to get on with it.”
The storied friendship of the two Hollywood A-listers goes all the way back to 1997 when the two took home the Best Original Screenplay Oscar for penning Good Will Hunting. Aside from his successful acting career, Affleck has gained acclaim behind the camera directing films like Gone Baby Gone and The Town before winning the Best Director Golden Globe for his behind-the-scenes work on Argo.
Affleck will continue his directorial career in an upcoming standalone Batman movie and will also reteam with Damon to executive produce the futuristic drama Incorporated, a new television series scheduled to debut later this year on Syfy.
Whether or not his friend is behind the camera may be a moot point. The larger issue could be finding the right superhero for Damon to portray.
Said Damon, “I’d consider anything with the right director, but I can’t imagine there are any superheroes left. I think they’re all taken at this moment.”
What do you think? Would you like to see Matt Damon portray a superhero?
