During a recent press conference promoting the latest Star Trek film, actor Simon Pegg, who stars as Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott in the reboot and additionally helped co-write the script, revealed that Lawrence’s Winter’s Bone character was his inspiration for Jaylah (portrayed by Kingsman: Secret Service actress Sofia Boutella).
“We were trying to create this very independent character. But we didn’t have a name for it,” said Pegg during the press event according to Vulture. “So we just called it ‘Jennifer-Lawrence-in-Winter’s–Bone.’”
According to Pegg, it wasn’t long before they realized referring to a character as “Jennifer-Lawrence-in-Winter’s–Bone” was a bit of a mouthful, so over time they ended up shortening it.
“We started calling her ‘J. Law.’ and then she became Jaylah,” explained Pegg.
There’s no word on whether or not Lawrence herself has heard that she indirectly inspired a new Star Trek character, but we can only imagine she’ll be incredibly flattered whenever she is let in on it.
In the mean time, we’re definitely looking forward to seeing Star Trek’s Jaylah in action now that we know that she was partially inspired by Lawrence’s unforgettable performance in Winter’s Bone!
Star Trek Beyond hits theaters on July 22.
