The upcoming season of Black Sails will be the final voyage for the Starz original series.
Starz announced on Wednesday that its Treasure Island prequel series will end after the show’s 10-episode fourth season. Starring Toby Stephens, Hannah New, Luke Arnold, and Jessica Parker Kennedy, Black Sails takes place two decades before the events of Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic novel Treasure Island and revolves around the battles and treasure hunts of Captain Flint and his band of pirates.
Created by Jonathan E. Steinberg and Robert Levine, Black Sails is the first Starz original series to go beyond three seasons.
“It’s a rare privilege in television to be given the kind of creative freedom we’ve enjoyed on this show over the last four years,” Steinberg said. “While it was a difficult decision for us to make this season our last, we simply couldn’t imagine anything beyond it that would make for a better ending to the story nor a more natural handoff to Treasure Island.”
While Black Sails is the first Starz original series to see a fourth season, it won’t be the last. The network recently renewed the 50 Cent-produced drama Power for a fourth and fifth season, as well as their historical time travel series Outlander for a third and fourth season.
The fourth and final season of Black Sails will premiere in 2017 on Starz.
