A big shakeup is reportedly coming to the Divergent series, and fans aren’t exactly happy about it.
On Wednesday (July 20), Variety exclusively reported that Ascendant, the final film in the series, will be heading straight to the small screen and that Lionsgate plans to use the final film as a means to springboard a spinoff series.
Since the report surfaced, fans have taken to Twitter to express their concerns about what’s to become of the Divergent series — with many worried that the film won’t get the ending it deserves.
“You shouldn’t make an Ascendant TV show,” wrote one fan on Twitter. “The fans care about the cast so much and we want our ending.”
Though fans may not be on board with Ascendant going straight to TV, it’s unsurprising that Lionsgate is looking to skip theaters altogether. The first installment of the two part finale earned the lowest box office totals of the whole franchise, grossing a mere $66 million total. That’s a huge drop from the first film in the series which grossed a total of $150 million.
To that end, wrapping up the final film on TV and then jumping into a spinoff series could actually be a good thing.
For starters, we could easily see Lionsgate choosing to go the prequel route and using a television series to flesh out how the factions in author Veronica Roth’s novel came to be. It could also be interesting to go back and put a spotlight on Four’s journey before he met Tris.
Recasting any of the main cast for television purposes is a bit of a gamble, but it seemed to work out fairly well for Freeform’s Mortal Instruments TV adaptation, Shadowhunters, who completely recast the roles made famous on the big screen by Lily Collins, Jamie Campbell Bower, and more.
Regardless of which direction Lionsgate decides to take the Divergent series, you can’t deny it’s an interesting time to be a fan.
