The singer posted a series of tweets on Thursday (July 21) detailing what the good news means for fans of One Direction.
“Happy to have signed to @CapitolUK. They have an amazing history of artists, I hope I can follow in their footsteps,” wrote Payne. “One direction will always be my home and family but I’m very exited to see what this chapter brings.”
Following the departure of Zayn Malik (who is currently exploring his own solo career), the successful boy band officially went on hiatus earlier this year. Since then, the remaining four 1D members have all been exploring their own avenues.
Like Payne, Harry Styles recently signed his own solo contract with Columbia Records— the same label One Direction is signed to. Styles is also getting his feet wet in the realm of acting. The “Steal My Girl” singer is currently filming the Christopher Nolan World War II drama, Dunkirk.
Meanwhile, despite not having signed to a label yet, Niall Horan also announced back in May that he’s currently working on solo music. Finally, Louis Tomlinson is busy helping aspiring artists by serving as a guest mentor on The X Factor UK, and a guest judge on America’s Got Talent.
News of yet another 1D member going solo may be bittersweet, but it’s nice to know we’ve got music from the boys to look forward to nevertheless!
