How exactly did an apple send the Gilmore Girls fandom into a frenzy? With just one photo.
The official Instagram account for Netflix’s upcoming Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life posted a seemingly innocuous picture of a cup of coffee (a must for Lorelai and Rory) alongside a plate of Pop Tarts with an apple in the middle. Pretty standard stuff, right?
Wrong. The mysterious teaser spawned two very different fan theories from online sleuths centering on past Gilmore Girl episodes.
“Pop-Tart appetizers to hold us over ’till the pizza comes,” the photo is captioned. “And one apple.”
The first theory is that the picture is a callback to the season one episode “Concert Interruptus” in which Lorelai gives Rory a plate full of Pop Tarts with an apple in the middle saying, “Pop Tart appetizers to tide you over until the pizza comes.” A simple, rational explanation.
The second theory, as Entertainment Weekly points out, is that one of the Gilmore women is pregnant. How did an apple lead fans to speculate about a pregnancy? Back in the season five episode “Blame Booze and Melville,” Lorelai reveals that she only craves apples when she’s pregnant.
“Okay, see, I’m eating an apple,” Lorelai explained. “Now normally this would not be a sign of anything except hunger, except I don’t eat much fruit. I know I should, but I don’t have a hankering for it. I had it when I was pregnant with my first kid, though. Kept craving those apples, and this morning, boy, was I craving an apple.”
In this case, an apple a day certainly does not keep the rumors away.
What does the mysterious photo mean? We’ll find out when Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life premieres November 25 on Netflix.
