After eight seasons of portraying everyone’s favorite mystery writer on the popular ABC series Castle, Nathan Fillion is returning to the network.

Fillion is joining the ABC sitcom Modern Family for a multi-episode arc next season. On Thursday, executive producer Steven Levitan announced at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that Fillion will play a weatherman, the cleverly named Rainor Shine, who gets involved with the Dunphy family.

While Fillion’s return to the network may not completely satisfy fans who are still upset about the cancellation of Castle, the chance to watch Fillion interact with Ty Burrell has to help cushion the blow.

The former Firefly star won’t be the only new face to appear on the successful sitcom. Legendary actor Martin Short, who recently starred alongside Maya Rudolph on the NBC variety show Maya & Marty, will also make a guest appearance during the second episode of the season. Entertainment Weekly reports that Short will portray a promotional maven by the name of Merv Schechter.

Along with his starring roles on Castle and Firefly, Fillion has also made appearances on Community, Lost, The Big Bang Theory, Desperate Housewives, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer.
