Margot Robbie Explains Why So Many Joker Scenes Got Cut From ‘Suicide Squad’

If Batman and Robin are the Dynamic Duo, Harley Quinn and the Joker could certainly be referred to as the Diabolical Duo. Despite mixed reviews, Suicide Squad dominated the box office this past weekend, grossing over $130 million on its way to passing Guardians of the Galaxy for the highest-grossing August launch ever.

While many fans were disappointed about the lack of screen time devoted to Jared Leto’s Joker, there may be a sliver lining. During a recent appearance on Tipsy Talk, Margot Robbie — who plays Harley Quinn in the film — revealed why she thinks so many Joker scenes ended up on the cutting room floor.

“We filmed so much of [Harley and Joker’s] backstory,” Robbie said. “They probably realized that the emotional through-line of the story had to be the mission that we were on.”

The actress went on to say that some of the footage the terrifying twosome shot was “insane.”

“I think when we were filming we got too engrossed in the flashbacks,” Margot continued. “Especially when you got Jared who’s gone so deep with that character, and we’re all going really, really deep, and David [Ayer] goes really deep with characters. So there’s a lot, but it just didn’t make sense to confuse the present storyline to incorporate all that.”
